On January 19, WDR 5 interviewed American Space Leipzig Director, Crister S. Garrett about the ongoing government shutdown.

Prof. Garrett explains that while this is not the first shutdown in American history, the current shutdown has a new quality. He sees a new chapter in the polarization of American politics.

But both the Democrats and President Trump have recently also shown a willingness for compromise, as for example in health care, tax and social policies, or border security. The ongoing disputes in Congress and the White House may be loud but they are not insolvable.
